George > The route of the "Cheng Ho": from Bali through the Lombok Strait and the Bali Sea, along the north coasts of Lombok and Sumbawa Islands, to the Komodo National Park and then back to Bima, Sumbawa. About 300 miles.

George > The boat is named for Cheng Ho, a Chinese admiral who led seven exploration expeditions throughout the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific in the early 1400's.

George > Janice Menke organized the trip, Hergen Spalink was the boat's diving director.

George > Following its torpedoing by the Japanese in the Lombok Strait in 1942 the USAT Liberty (an armed freighter) was beached here near Tulamben, Bali. In 1963 the eruption of this volcano, Mt. Agung, and the resulting events pushed the ship wreck off the beach and into the water.
